Chief Executive Officer

Peter Burns

Peter Burns is the Chief Executive of the YMCA Victoria Group, Australia. He enjoys the privilege of working with a talented, diverse and dedicated voluntary Board; and a skilled team of professionals dedicated to creating happier, healthier and inclusive communities.

Peter proudly declares, “here at the Y, we believe in the power of inspired young people.  We stand up for them.  We inspire them.  We are inspired by them.  We are guided by them.”

Peter believes that in today’s world, no amount of short-term brilliance or momentary amazing can tackle the bigger picture of where we are headed.  Nor will those who have had their turn, question and create the change we need to see in the world. He knows that making a positive difference in our world relies on providing every young person with a future full of opportunity; a future where we can all be healthy, happy and connected.

Peter has enjoyed many roles during his career including time as Youth Leader, Swim Teacher, Lifeguard, Fitness Instructor, Outdoor Educator, Youth Worker, Community & Aquatic Centre Manager, Educator and Deputy CEO.

As Chief Executive of YMCA Victoria, Peter has led the organisation through a time of unprecedented growth and diversification. This period is grounded deeply in the mission achievement of the YMCA, and underpinned by his commitment to build enduring partnerships and ensure equitable access for all to the YMCA’s programs and services.

Peter has extensive experience in global and national affairs. He is a past Chair of the YMCA World Urban Network, current member of the YMCA Australia Strategic Management Group; and contributor to dozens national and international committees and task forces. Outside the YMCA he is Secretary of the Father’s Day Council of Victoria, a member of The Rotary Club of Melbourne, and past Deputy Chair and committee member of several community and not-for-profit organisations including VicSport, Warrandyte Festival, and the People & Parks Foundation.

An engaging speaker and group facilitator, Peter regularly speaks at conferences and conducts community consultations. His insights into community strengthening, expert facilitation of community-based strategic planning sessions and inspirational personal story mean that he is in high demand around the globe.

A proud father of three independent, thriving and dedicated young adults, Peter and his wife, Maree live in Melbourne, where they enjoy an active community life.

Peter has completed the Australian Institute of Company Directors course and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management.  He holds a Master of Professional Education and Training; Graduate Diploma in Exercise Rehabilitation; Bachelor of Education; Graduate Certificate in Business Management, and Graduate Certificate Action Learning.

"The future of our world future depends on the ideas, energy and voice of the group with the most to benefit; and the most to lose; young people. Everything else will follow.”
