What we stand for

Empowering young people

YMCA Victoria has long been an advocate for healthier, happier and better connected communities. Through our advocacy work, the Y aims to influence policy, funding and legislation which support the prevention and treatment of lifestyle related illness.

We do this by:

  • Raising awareness of social or health issues to influence decision makers in Government and communities across Victoria.
  • Developing relationships to create a united voice
  • Leading by example to make sure that we are promoting health and wellbeing throughout our operations, programs and services.

Healthy living

Australia’s childhood obesity rate continues to rise. In 2014, 27.4% of children aged 5-17 were reported as overweight or obese, up from 25.3% just three years prior.

Social impact

43 people drowned in Victoria between July 2015 and June 2016. That’s 43 too many. Another 70 people has their lives seriously impacted by non-fatal drowning incidents of ‘near misses’, and with these figures rising year on year – action is needed.

Inspired young people

Young people are often portrayed negatively in mainstream media, and many young people feel like they don’t have a say on issues that matter to them most.
