Kinship Carer Camps

League of Extraordniary Grandparents

Our extraordinary kinship carers need your help

Kinship Carer Camps are for families who care for a child under a kinship care arrangement. Kinship is a form of out of home care that means that the child does not live with their parents but another family member or close friend, instead of with a foster carer.

The challenges they face are significant. Research from the University of New South Wales found that grandparent carers are more likely to be financially disadvantaged, suffer from health problems and experience social isolation and disrupted friendships.

Given the lack of support services available for carers and their families, the YMCA Kinship Carer Camps was born.

These specialised three-day camping experiences give carers and their families the much-needed break that they deserve..

What happens on camp?

Our YMCA Recreational Campsites provide the perfect environment for carers and their children to relax, unwind and enjoy some stress-free time together.

Each family will be assigned an experienced and enthusiastic volunteer to help support the children through fun campsite activities and unique excursions. With the children in safe hands, carers will get the opportunity to have some free time, participate in workshops and dine out together. The camp will also help carers to build their social circles and learn more about services that can assist them in the future.

“It was the best weekend we’ve ever had since having the kids,” said Isabel, a carer told us after attending the 2014 camp.
