Sequins, fun hats, puppets and dance routines to ‘Ain’t no mountain high enough.’

On Tuesday 4 December, The Yarraville Social Club transformed for the 11th Creative Arts Concert run by YMCA Disability Services. With over a hundred people attending, the show continues to be bigger and bolder than previous years.

With 27 performers taking part in the concert, the atmosphere was electric with the audience clapping along to hits like ‘Your lips are moving’ and The Greatest Showman’s ‘This is me.’

The feedback from performers ranged from pre-show nerves, “I am so nervous” to “this is so exciting” to “I love this” and “look at my makeup!”

But beyond the glitz and glamour was a lot of hard work, encouragement and team work from performers, disability services staff and volunteers. The group practiced once a week over 46 weeks of 2018 with support from others for hair, make-up, costumes and props. The result of this combined effort and professional theatre value shined through on the concert night.

Suzanne Mills, Director of Disability Services said Creative Arts was all about inclusion and using dance, music and performance to express and challenge themselves.

“For a person living with a disability, it is all about being given the same opportunity by making their own choices and having control over them.”

“This year’s performance oozed showmanship with spectacular costumes and the pure joy on each and everyone’s face as they took to the stage was overwhelming,” she said.

Mahamed Jama-Hassan was a volunteer at the concert and found the experience extremely positive

“I wanted to do something I don’t often do, which is to get out of my comfort zone and appear on stage in front of an audience.”

He also enjoyed being able to put a smile on the performer’s faces, “I enjoyed seeing how excited everyone was when they got their trophy. Especially my buddy Tim, who tried to run away with his,” he said.

While this year’s concert has wrapped up, it won’t be long until practice starts again for 2019’s show - which is guaranteed to have even more glitter and colour.
