Each financial year, Life Saving Victoria conducts a Pool Safety Assessment (PSA) at 28 YMCA-managed facilities to provide a snapshot of our safety and compliance performance compared to other facilities in Victoria.
Despite the many challenges we faced last year, including the devastating bushfires and beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Y maintained its safety and compliance standards in 2019/20. In fact, the Y outperformed other facilities assessed in Victoria by 22.3% for compliance and 19.4% for safety, with our overall compliance being 96.5% and our overall safety score being 93.5%.
The assessment is conducted by a licensed Pool Safety Assessor, who audits facilities across a variety of area such as ‘Work Health and Safety’ and ‘Emergency Planning’. YMCA facilities performed best in the areas of Lap and Pool Lanes, Supervision and First Aid, where our scores were at 99%.
YMCA-managed seasonal facilities also scored well above industry standards. Overall, our seasonal pools scored 95.7% in compliance (compared to 72.5% at other facilities) and 91.7% in safety (compared to 72.9% at other facilities).
Safety in and around the water is a top priority at the YMCA, and these results show that our facilities have all the right measures in place to prevent risk of injury to members of the community or to our staff.
We look forward to continue working with Life Saving Victoria as the aquatics industry addresses the challenges of the 2020/21 summer season, which is already drawing concern from the industry due to COVID-19 restrictions that have hindered children from attending swimming lessons and learning vital water safety skills.
