Wangaratta Indoor Sports and Aquatic Centre (WISAC) is set to open its doors 24 hours, providing flexibility for members to exercise at a time that suits them.

The move is the latest innovation at the centre, which will also launch Virtual Group Fitness classes in the coming months,  increasing exercise options and training times for members.

WISAC Manager Maree Warnett said the move to 24/7 gym access was in line with Council’s focus of increasing availability and access to community recreational facilities.

“Better accessibility is the goal with the move to 24 hours,” said Ms Warnett. “This is in line with creating flexible choices for the whole community, especially those who are time-poor.”

“Our research has indicated that night users are not only shift workers but also mothers with babies and those who find the quieter times more comfortable. We want to encourage everyone to be more active so providing 24 hour access to a safe and secure environment will help achieve this."

The Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan 2017-2021 highlights that being active and participating in leisure and sport can increase the community’s sense of wellbeing, social interaction and physical fitness, as well as reducing anxiety, stress and the likelihood of illness.

Ms Warnett said that this was in perfect alignment with the YMCA’s commitment to providing the best programs and services possible at Wangaratta Indoor Sports and Aquatic Centre.

“The YMCA aims to help people become healthier and happier so removing barriers to entry and providing options that suit all lifestyles is important,” she said.

The centre has undergone a comprehensive risk assessment and members will be provided with individual access cards that include safety measures for times that the gym is unstaffed.

The innovation will include some redevelopment of the centre’s access points and some small internal structural changes. Ms Warnett expects works for the 24/7 development to commence over the coming months.

Wangaratta Indoor Sports & Aquatic Centre is managed by YMCA Victoria on behalf of Rural City of Wangaratta.
