On Sunday 3 September 2017 thousands of people flocked to Melbourne’s the Tan to celebrate dads and father figures at the YMCA Father’s Day Fun Run.

Only in its second year, the event has proven a hit with dads, families and dogs alike.

Despite some drizzle, the atmosphere on the day was one of excitement, celebration and fun.

Familiar faces returned for a second time as well as many new participants to take part in the 5km or 10km run or walk around the beautiful Tan track, dotted with entertainment along the way.

Smooth FM and the Smooth Angels were on the course providing beats and encouragement, YMCA volunteers hi-fived participants as they passed, and stilt walkers greeted them as they crossed the finish line.

Jason Stack, this year’s Victorian Father of the Year, was front of the pack with his family for the 5km course alongside last year’s Victorian Father of the Year, Terry Mitropoulos, who was there for a second time with his two boys.

Ambassador Paul Roos and his son Dylan ran the 5km together, while ambassador Jess Hay walked the 5km with her family – their first fun run together. Simone Pucci and Natalie Moore, also ambassadors, took part with their families before enjoying the Event Village afterwards.

“It’s something we could all do together,” said Lynn Kong, first-time participant who came along with her partner and their little boy.

“It’s much better than buying any random thing as a present!”

“The best thing is getting everyone together,” said Gerry Delaney, who was accompanied by three generations of his family at the event.

“It’s a nice easy stroll for us today, we’re not rushing with the little one.”

Once participants had completed their 5km or 10km walk or run, they were able to kick back and enjoy the Event Village. Full of activities for the kids, a petting zoo, live band, and of course coffee, people enjoyed the celebration in their red ponchos provided by the YMCA.

“I’ve already told mum and dad I want to do it next year!” said 10-year-old Liam, who ran the 5km in 28 minutes.

To the staff, volunteers, event staff and sponsors: thank you for your efforts in making the second annual YMCA Father’s Day Fun Run a huge success!
