Jimmy's, a Youth Wellbeing Sanctuary dedicated to supporting young people from diverse backgrounds, has received $1.64 million in federal funding over four years.
Jimmy's primary focus is to empower young people to take responsibility for their own wellbeing, and build resilience in a safe place. Programs and services are delivered therapeutically to strengthen their futures and help them get back control of their lives.
The funding will allow Jimmy's to launch the After School Wellbeing Program, which will provide 160 sessions each year for vulnerable young people on the Mornington Peninsula. The program will feature educational sessions and workshops to foster life skills, build resilience, and improve overall mental health and wellbeing.
This funding will also allow Jimmy’s to continue providing safe access to accommodation in a learning environment through their Overnight Stay Program, and promote healthy relationship building, online safety and mental health literacy through their School Transition Workshops.
YMCA Youth Services Manager Jeanette Horsley welcomed the funding, “By providing a safe and supportive environment for young people, we can support them to learn, grow, and develop essential life skills, the After School Wellbeing Program aims to make a lasting impact on the lives of vulnerable youth in our community
“We have a proven track record helping young people from the Mornington Peninsula build skills, confidence and a sense of belonging. Whether it's an after-school program or an overnight camp, we help reduce their risk of mental illness as they transition into adulthood.”
Quotes attributable to Emma McBride, Assistant Minister for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention:
“Supporting the mental health and wellbeing of young people has never been more important. Teenagers and young adults are at significant risk of mental ill-health and psychological distress.
“Early intervention to help young people build self-esteem, coping strategies and resilience reduces the risk of developing mental illness during teenage years and into adulthood.
“The Albanese Government is proud to continue supporting Jimmy’s Youth Wellbeing Sanctuary, so that young people on the Mornington Peninsula can get the care and support they need, when they need it.”
This grant from the Department of Health and Aged Care forms part of the ongoing commitment to support the wellbeing of young people on the Mornington Peninsula community.
