Melbourne's Skate Community Ready to Welcome New Skaters

With skateboarding capturing Australia's attention, Melbourne's skate scene is ready to welcome new skaters. Managed by YMCA Victoria (the Y), Melbourne's top skate parks are leading the charge, focusing on young girls and beginners.

Inspired by Australian skateboarders like Arisa Trew, the Y invites Melburnians of all ages and abilities to experience the community of skateboarding. Riverslide Skate Park, at the heart of Melbourne's skate culture, offers several programs specifically for women and girls, promoting fun and social skating in a supportive environment.

Skateboarding is for everyone. Our programs are inclusive and available to anyone who wants to try skateboarding Matthew Brett, the Y’s Skate and Action Sports Manager

Besides Riverslide Skate Park in Melbourne CBD, the Y also manages Junction Skate Park in Hawthorn and Knox Skate Park. Each offers unique features and programs for skaters of all levels.

Our Social Impact Survey reveals that 95% of participants at Riverslide Skate Park report enhanced resilience skills. Additionally, 87% gained new skills as well as greater community connections.

Skateboarding is more than a sport—it's a tool for social inclusion. A University of Western Australia study highlights how it fosters connections and engages youth in public spaces, encouraging creativity and community engagement.

"Supporting grassroots action sports is what we do best,” added Matthew. "With skateboarding' s popularity rising, we're excited to help people find their passion, develop new skills and connect to a thriving community of like-minded people."

On the Bass Coast, there are up to six parks to choose from, including Wonthaggi, Phillip Island, and Inverloch.
