For families with a loved one with a disability, camps can feel out of reach. Packing, leaving home, and facing physical or emotional barriers make the experience seem overwhelming.
Interchange Outer East, a disability service provider, recently partnered with Y’s Mt. Evelyn Discovery Camp to create a safe, accessible, and welcoming day camp experience for families, without the need for an overnight stay.
Jacinta Benne, Family Support Programs Coordinator at Interchange Outer East, emphasised that for many families, everyday events like going away for a weekend can feel impossible. "A child might get overwhelmed, or the facilities may not be accessible."
The Y’s Mt. Evelyn Discovery Camp was the perfect location for families to feel comfortable.
We had a family with a young boy who takes a really long time to adjust to new environments. Because the camp was just 15 minutes from their home, they could return home when needed and come back later in the day Jacinta Benne
The camp offered accessible activities for all abilities. “Families were excited once they got involved. We focused on their needs, like our low ropes course, designed for teamwork and safety,” said Sam, Y camp coordinator.
The experienced Mt Evelyn team ensures that each activity, whether it’s archery, the giant swing, or wildlife encounters, is run with safety and inclusivity at its core. “We try to ensure everyone feels involved,” Sam explained. “If I ever need more help understanding how to best support someone, I’ll ask their helpers or family members to make sure we’re providing the best experience.”
Thanks to support from Yarra Ranges Council and a Regional Community Recovery Grant, the weekend break was an affordable, local option. “Activities like the giant swing and archery aren’t things you do every day. We’re proud to give families unique experiences,” said Sam.
Equally important as the camp activities was the chance for families to connect. Many families living with children with disabilities rarely get the chance to meet others who truly understand their challenges. With the support of the staff and volunteers, parents had time to relax while their children enjoyed supervised activities. Jacinta noted, “The volunteers did an incredible job ensuring the kids were engaged, giving parents the opportunity to have a break and connect with others in similar situations.”
One of the highlights of the day was the wildlife experience, where children and families got to interact with reptiles and other animals. “Kids loved it,” Jacinta said. “They got to touch and see things they’ve never experienced before, and it was a definite highlight for many.”
The Interchange Outer East Family Day Camp gave everyone a fun, memorable day outdoors – every family deserves the chance to connect and create lasting memories.
