The Y Celebrates Double Win at AUSactive 2024 National Awards

YMCA Victoria have been recognised with two major awards at the AUSactive 2024 National Awards. Y managed Hawthorn Aquatic and Leisure Centre was named Multi-Service Business of the Year, while Coburg Leisure Centre earned the title of Leisure Centre of the Year.

Nadine Kemp, General Manager Recreation, said, “Our teams work tirelessly to create spaces that welcome and support everyone, and these awards are a true reflection of their dedication. I would like to congratulate the other finalists and acknowledge their contributions to creating healthier and more connected communities across Australia.”

Hawthorn Aquatic and Leisure Centre (HALC), with its commitment to health and community connectedness, continues to excel with programs like the Inclusive Dugongs Program, a learn to swim program for students with special needs and combined with consistent year-on-year growth across program offerings and participation, the team at HALC had a terrific year.

Boorondara Area Manager Ben Porteous acknowledged the strong competition across the leisure industry, “We’re incredibly proud of this achievement and remain committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for everyone, delivering high-quality service that our community has come to expect from us. This recognition reflects the hard work of our team and our ongoing commitment to meeting the evolving needs of our members and visitors."

Members have praised the team's efforts, with one testimonial highlighting the positive atmosphere at the centre: "Every time I arrive at the reception, I always feel welcome with friendly greetings and smiles from the staff. Public safety, cleanliness, and promoting members' wellbeing are always top priorities. HALC is much more than a fitness centre; it’s a safe and welcoming community hub."

Coburg Leisure Centre’s (CLC) focus on inclusivity and sustainability was praised, with participation increasing by an impressive 70% in 2023. Milestones such as Life Saving Victoria’s Platinum Pool Accreditation, the introduction of new accessible changerooms, inclusive programs like Rainbow-Fish-Aqua-Sensory-Classes, and the expansion of the Active Adults Program showcased CLC’s commitment to safety, inclusivity, and community engagement.

Merri-bek Area Manager Lauren Schliebs expressed her excitement for the recognition, reflecting on the centre's remarkable transformation, “Following significant investment and extensive works by Merri-bek City Council over the past three years, 2023 was a standout year for us. We welcomed over a quarter of a million visits and grew our membership base to more than 2,300. This success has been driven by a clear strategic vision, focusing on Swimming Lessons and Memberships, alongside strong retention and acquisition campaigns that set new records for community engagement”
