This Christmas, the children at John Henry YMCA’s Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) in Pakenham took part in an activity that brought young and old together in a special way.
What began as part of a 10-day Christmas challenge, across the 40 OSHC Services managed by the Y in Victoria, turned into a meaningful project when one of the children suggested writing cards for residents at a local aged care facility.
YMCA Service Director Rhiannan Ash explained,
We did some research and found that around 60% of aged care residents don’t receive visitors during the festive season. The children wanted to make a real difference.
Their efforts went beyond cards. The children baked cookies and sang to the residents of Salisbury House with ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’.
One card, written by a child who wrote, “You are not alone. Know that we are thinking of you,” deeply touched a resident who had recently lost her husband. Rhiannan described the moment as “just so special,” with many residents moved to tears.

The success of this initiative inspired the start of a pen pal program, ensuring the connection continues beyond the holidays. “We’re creating a scrapbook and a mascot to exchange stories between the children and residents. It’s a way to keep this bond alive,” Rhiannan said.
The project has resonated with everyone involved. “The kids, educators, and residents have all reflected on the true meaning of Christmas—kindness,” Rhiannan noted. “It’s been an unforgettable experience for us all.”
Loneliness can be very challenging for many this time of year, the children at John Henry YMCA OSHC have reminded us how small acts of generosity can make meaningful connections and bring light to those who might otherwise feel forgotten during the holiday season. In the new year we will be exploring other partnership opportunities with aged care facilities near our OSHC sites where we can work on impactful programs together.
