Young people on the Bass Coast are gaining real-world job skills thanks to a new training program aimed at preparing them for employment.

A forward-thinking initiative driven by the YES Youth Hub is giving young people on the Bass Coast a head start in the workforce. Partnering with Bass Coast Adult Learning and Learn Local, the Youth Hub has created pathway to a program that delivers practical job skills and builds confidence in Bass Coast youth, helping them take their first steps towards meaningful employment.

From making the perfect coffee to preparing food safely, the program equips participants with hands-on skills to help them land jobs in the local tourism and hospitality industries. But it’s about more than just practical training. Participants also brushed up on resume writing, interview techniques, and even had a laugh testing AI-generated resumes for fun.

Olivia Hurrell, Partnerships Coordinator at Bass Coast Adult Learning, said the initiative was about giving young people the confidence to take their first steps into the workforce.

Many of these young people feel disconnected from school or larger training environments. The smaller class sizes and supportive trainers made all the difference. We saw their confidence build as the day went on.

Olivia continued, “It’s all about creating real opportunities for young people and helping them see what’s possible.”

The program has already seen a strong response, with close to 20 young people walking away with newfound skills and confidence.

Funded by DFFH Engage! and backed by the YMCA Victoria and Bass Coast Shire Council, the program was a hit. With tourism a major employer in the region, the training gives participants immediate pathways into local cafés, hospitality venues, and even food services in hospitals and aged care.

More sessions are already planned for 2025, with the program set to grow even further. To stay updated and learn more about upcoming opportunities, keep an eye on the YES Youth Hub Facebook page.
