When temperatures soared this summer, the Horsham Aquatic Centre became more than just a place to cool off—it became a vital community hub. With over 4,400 casual visits in January alone, including 2,800 through the $2 swim initiative, the centre proved its worth beyond recreation. It’s a place where families find relief, where social connections are built, and where equality is at the forefront.
The team at Horsham Aquatic Centre continues to punch above their weight, proving that the right partnerships and initiatives can make a significant community impact. By reducing financial barriers, the centre is simply providing access to opportunities that people are already seeking—safe spaces to connect, unwind, and stay active. It’s about giving the community a choice, ensuring that everyone, regardless of circumstances, has a place to turn to for wellbeing and support.
But team isn’t stopping there. It has introduced sensory-friendly swimming for those with sensory sensitivities, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the water without barriers. Free sanitary products have been installed in the female change rooms, and shower facilities remain open for those affected by homelessness or impacted by the fires in the region.
The impact of these initiatives is heartwarming—not just in attendance numbers but in community sentiment. Horsham residents see their centre not as a business, but as an extension of their community. The once transactional relationship with members has evolved into something far more meaningful.
This summer also saw the centre host the Hands Up Day event in partnership with local Aboriginal organisations. The event, focused on mental health and wellbeing, held special significance, highlighting the cultural and emotional connection to water.
The 2024 HAND UP celebration brought our community together in a vibrant display of resilience, connection, and cultural pride, highlighting our shared journey of healing and unity. A huge thank you to the YMCA, especially Michelle and her team, for providing such a welcoming space and unwavering support. As we look ahead, Horsham Aquatic Centre is setting the standard for what community recreation should be. It’s not just about swimming laps—it’s about creating a healthier, more connected, and more inclusive regional Victoria.
