Little Long Walk Inspires Young Learners in Kororoit Creek
Children at the Y’s Kororoit Creek Early Learning Centre (ELC) took big steps in their journey toward reconciliation last week, as they embarked on a Little Long Walk through local parklands and Kororoit Creek Primary School.
The event—part of the centre’s 18-month journey in their Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP)—aimed to help children and educators strengthen their connection to Country, community, and First Nations culture.
The excited group, including the younger children from Kororoit Creek YMCA playgroup, set off with banners they had created alongside The Long Walk ambassadors Jack Peris and Jenaya Serra from Essendon Football Club. They explored the natural surrounds of the parklands before walking through the neighbouring primary school, where some spotted older siblings, making the experience even more meaningful.
It was a special moment for the children. We hope they felt connected to the land, their community, and can pass this experience and knowledge onto their families when they go home. Lia Costanzo, Centre Manager
At the parklands and back at the centre, the children proudly performed an Acknowledgement of Country. Parents and educators gathered to watch as they shared their appreciation for First Nations culture.
To finish off the morning, Aunty Joy led a traditional smoking ceremony, teaching them about the significance of land and its stories. The children also discovered the Aboriginal names of local birds and animals, gaining a deeper respect for the world around them, while having a little fun too.
The Little Long Walk is inspired by AFL legend Michael Long’s historic 2004 journey to Canberra, advocating for Indigenous rights. Through activities like this, Kororoit Creek ELC is not just educating children—it’s sparking conversations at home and inspiring future generations to carry forward the message of reconciliation.
The hope is that by embedding reconciliation into everyday learning, it will resonate with young minds and carry us on a journey towards a more just world.
