Active Merri-bek’s Aquatics & Leisure centres have successfully completed one of the world’s leading occupational health and safety standards ISO 45001, reinforcing the Y’s commitment to providing safe and inclusive spaces for the community.
The ISO certification sets the benchmark for best practice in workplace safety and risk management and have conducted this audit for over 10 years at Merri-bek sites.
The BSI Surveillance Audit, which assessed both Fawkner and Coburg Leisure Centres and certification recognises the centres' strong safety culture, ensuring that every visitor, staff member, and community member can enjoy a safe environment.
Dan Coathup, YMCA Victoria’s Head of Risk, praised the efforts of the teams involved,
A huge thank you to everyone who upholds safety at our Merri-bek sites every day. This certification is a major milestone, demonstrating our strong and mature Safety Management System.
The Fawkner Leisure Centre’s reaccreditation is particularly significant given it recently reopened to the community in December 2024.
“Achieving and maintaining ISO 45001 accreditation is a key focus for the Y, ensuring that our centres continue to meet the highest safety standards. We’re proud to work closely with Merri-bek City Council to provide safe, welcoming spaces where the community can focus on their wellbeing and connection with others,” Dan explained.
Paul McPherson, YMCA Victoria’s Head of Operations added, "With over 11 million visits to our recreation centres each year, we are proud to lead the industry in safety and excellence. This accreditation is a testament to the hard work of our teams and our commitment to keeping every visit safe, every time.”
