Leading with Care and Dignity

Homelessness is a growing issue on the Bass Coast, with an increasing number of people sleeping rough and struggling to access basic hygiene. In response, the Y has launched a Shower Bag Initiative, providing free showers and essential toiletries at Bass Coast Aquatic & Leisure Centre and Phillip Island Leisure Centre.

The program aims to fill a critical gap in services. Individuals in need can collect a voucher at the neighbourhood houses to receive a free shower and collect a pack containing toiletries, a toothbrush and toothpaste, a towel, and a washer from the Y. The voucher can be used as many times as needed, ensuring continued access without cost or stigma.

Community workers say demand for basic services is rising across the region, with many struggling to afford essentials amid cost-of-living pressures. The neighbourhood houses in Wonthaggi and Cowes, which serve as the first point of contact for many seeking help, have already begun distributing vouchers.

It’s a simple initiative, but for someone sleeping rough, a warm shower and fresh toiletries can make a world of difference Denise Escreet, Community Activation Coordinator for the Y Bass Coast

To keep the initiative sustainable, the Y is working to secure ongoing donations from local supermarkets and retailers, aiming to maintain a steady supply of hygiene products. The program has also drawn support from the local council, the Salvation Army, and St Vincent de Paul, who are helping to spread awareness and ensure those in need can access the service.

Recognising that stigma can be a barrier to seeking help, the program has been designed to be as discreet and accessible as possible. Reception staff have been trained to assist people with sensitivity, and the voucher system allows individuals to access showers without needing to explain their circumstances.

Initiatives like these do more than provide basic necessities—they offer a moment of dignity and remind us all of the power of simple, human kindness.
