Corangamite’s outdoor pools have now closed for the season after months of keeping communities cool and safe in the summer heat. Despite the challenges of operating outdoor pools in today’s climate, YMCA Victoria staff have been recognised their role in creating welcoming spaces that bring communities together, ensuring locals and visitors alike feel at home.
Visitors have praised the pools as community assets, with one Timboon Pool patron stating:
Came up from Geelong. Beautiful setting. The staff were friendly and attentive. This pool is such an asset to the town and hope to see it maintained.
At Terang Pool, customers highlighted the exceptional efforts of staff, who not only kept the facility clean and inviting but also actively engaged with children.
"... they are doing the most amazing job. Always interacting with the children playing games as-well as teaching them safety ways to save each other with noodles and kick boards."
Beyond daily operations, this season the pools have attracted a number of schools and users from neighbouring towns and municipalities including Colac, Beaufort, Geelong, Castlemaine and more. The Timboon Swim School break-up was a highlight, reinforcing the value of water safety education in our region.
Corangamite and Moyne Pools Manager Lee Edge highlighted the importance of these pools to regional towns, saying:
"Outdoor pools are a great place to cool off but also important historic community hubs that bring people together every summer. We’re proud to work with councils to activate these spaces, welcoming both locals and visitors to be active, social, and safe in the water."
Additionally, our local pools continue to provide meaningful employment for young people in the area. Many staff have the opportunity to move into roles at other centres during the cooler months and explore career pathways with the YMCA, including opportunities in Melbourne.
As the season ends, these efforts leave a lasting impact on the community, ensuring access to VicSwim programs, local events, and vital summer jobs for young people.
