YMCA Victoria (the Y) has welcomed the news that it has been successful in receiving a grant of $2.3 million from the Victorian Government as part of the 100 Neighbourhood Batteries Program.
This funding will electrify six Y Discovery Camps across regional and suburban Victoria, advancing the Y’s journey toward a carbon-neutral future while creating a more sustainable experience for over 80,000 guests each year.
“We are deeply grateful for the Victorian Government’s support,” says Daniel Whykes, Y Camps Head of Operations Manager. “Neighbourhood batteries will enable Y Discovery Camps to store solar energy, lower power bills, and provide a reliable backup power source during extreme weather events—ensuring continued access to services for our guests and local communities.”

The Y Discovery Camps are not new to sustainability. Over the past three years, in line with the Y’s Vision 2030 global commitment towards a sustainable planet, we’ve been on an ambitious carbon-neutral path. Key achievements include: carbon baselining, education programs for campers, solar panel roll out, training and partnering with Island Energy.
“These sustainability measures demonstrate our ongoing dedication to creating a sustainable planet while educating the next generation of community leaders,” said Daniel.
"Y Discovery camps provide young people and community groups a space to connect with nature, learn about environmental responsibility, and see the role they can play in shaping the future,” Daniel added.
This funding enables YMCA Victoria to position its camps as eco-friendly educational hubs, not just for campers but also for local communities. Through training and green practices the Y is empowering families, educators, and students to take meaningful action for a more sustainable future.
