The Y’s $523K Early Learning Centre Kitchen Upgrades

The Y has secured $523,000 from the Victorian Government's Building Blocks Grants Improvement stream to upgrade kitchen facilities at five Early Learning centres across Melbourne and enhance outdoor yard spaces at a further four centres. This investment will bring to life child-friendly kitchens where kids can begin to learn about cooking, and start to develop lifelong skills.

“At the Y, we know magic can happen when children get hands-on in the kitchen,” said Katie Adams, YMCA Victoria’s General Manager of Children's Programs. “We want to see children being curious and learning practical skills they’ll carry with them for life.”

The upgraded kitchens will feature expanded bench space, easily accesible viewing platforms, and safety measures like child-proof locks and non-slip flooring. It’s a space that offers parents the reassurance that their child is developing confidence, creativity, and a love for healthy eating in a safe and engaging environment

Designed so children of all abilities can be involved, and with thoughtful safety features like rounded edges and slip-resistant floors, it’s an environment where parents can feel safe knowing their children will explore with confidence.

“We’re incredibly excited to see how these upgrades will transform the way we deliver education, through hands-on activities in the kitchen." Katie added.

We’re saving busy families time and money, giving every child in Victoria the best start in life – with safe, modern and accessible kindergartens in every corner of the state. These upgrades will give our littlest learners the environments they deserve to grow and thrive, while making it easier for parents and carers to return to work and study if they choose. Minister for Children Lizzie Blandthorn

The Building Blocks Improvement Program helps kindergartens to build and improve the infrastructure they need to support local families – since 2020 this program has delivered more than $67 million to improve kinders across Victoria.
