Numurkah Aquatic & Fitness Centre has won the 2025 Aquatics & Recreation Victoria (ARV) Small Facility Management Award, proving that community heart and hands-on leadership matter just as much as size or budget.
Managed by YMCA Victoria on behalf of Moira Shire Council, the Numurkah team was recognised for its impact across everything from inclusive health programs to school swim access, NDIS partnerships and grassroots fundraising.
Moira Shire Council Administrator Dr Graeme Emonson PSM, said "This award is a fantastic recognition of the passion and dedication shown by the entire team at the Numurkah Aquatic & Fitness Centre. Council is proud to partner with the YMCA in delivering such vital services for our residents, and we’re thrilled to see their hard work celebrated at a state level."
Centre Manager Carien Hesselberg said the win was a proud moment for the whole town.
“This award is a testament to the value and impact of local recreation facilities in smaller regional areas. It highlights the Y’s commitment to delivering programs that support health, wellbeing and social connection for all ages,” she said.
“We may be small, but we have a big heart.”
Numurkah Aquatic & Fitness Centre punches well above its weight, delivering health and wellbeing programs right across Moira Shire. The team provides essential swim access to rural schools, one-on-one support to members, and inclusive programs for people with disability through strong partnerships with allied health providers.
In 2024, the team led the state in YMCA Open Doors fundraising, with donations supporting local families facing financial hardship. They also raised funds for charities like the Royal Flying Doctor Service and Cerebral Palsy Alliance, a testament to their community-first mindset.
With nearly 12% of the Numurkah population either a member or swim student, the win is a reminder of the critical role smaller facilities play in community life.
