Wheelchair users and people with mobility challenges will soon be able to ride the trails at Lady Northcote Discovery Camp, thanks to new Accessible Hand Cycle Bikes funded through the Victorian Government’s Regional All Abilities Participation Grant.
Local Member for Eureka, Michaela Settle MP, visited the Glenmore camp to see the bikes in action and hear how they will be added to the popular mountain biking program. She met with YMCA Victoria’s Head of Camps, Daniel Whykes, and Camp Manager, Rob Cummins, to discuss how the new equipment will open up the thrill and freedom of cycling to more people in the Moorabool region and beyond.
These hand cycles mean no one has to sit on the sidelines. They give all campers the chance to now take part, enjoy the outdoors and build the confidence that comes with trying something new. Daniel Whykes
The program has been co-designed with AusCycling and will be delivered in partnership with Adaptive Concepts Australia, who will supply the bikes. The initiative is part of the Y’s commitment to creating outdoor adventure experiences that are accessible and inclusive for all Victorians.
The $40 million All Abilities Sport Fund is designed to improve access to sport and active recreation in regional and rural Victoria, helping organisations like the Y break down barriers to participation.
Lady Northcote Discovery Camp welcomes school groups, community groups and families each year, making the new bikes a valuable addition for visitors with disability across the region.
