Father of three Dr Billy Garvey has been named the 2025 Victorian Father of the Year, recognised for his work supporting families and building one of Australia’s most trusted parenting communities.
Billy is a leading developmental paediatrician, researcher, author and podcast host. His show Pop Culture Parenting is Australia’s number one parenting podcast, downloaded by thousands of families every day and creating a space where parents share stories, learn from each other and know they are not alone.
He was nominated for the award by one of those listeners, a mother he has never met, who credits his advice with helping her support her son with complex needs.
“I know it’s how I am with them, not how much I am with them,” Billy said of his own parenting. “I try to demonstrate unconditional love, especially when things are tough, not just when they’re doing what I want. That’s what protects their mental health and helps them learn how to manage emotions.”
Alongside the podcast, Billy founded Guiding Growing Minds, a social enterprise that equips parents and professionals with practical tools to support children’s wellbeing. He also speaks regularly at schools and community groups, making research accessible through conversation and real-life examples.
Y Victoria Chief Executive Carolyn Morris said Billy’s work was now more important than ever.
“At the Y, our bold goal is to improve the wellbeing and sense of belonging for four million people by 2030. As Victorian Father of the Year, Billy helps to bring that vision to life, creating stronger families and stronger communities.”
Now in its 69th year, the Victorian Father of the Year award celebrates fathers and father-figures who make a positive difference in their families and communities.
