Tara Lake recognised at the Victorian Disability Sport and Recreation Awards

For more than nine years, Tara Lake has been championing disability inclusion in gymnastics. What began as a grassroots program at Balwyn Gymnastics has grown to support athletes now competing on the international stage.

This year, Tara’s commitment was recognised when she was named 2025 Coach or Fitness Leader of the Year at the Victorian Disability Sport and Recreation Awards.

Her coaching journey started as a teenager when she first assisted in inclusive classes. “I loved how we could shape the class and gymnasts’ experiences based on their goals, and play an integral role in facilitating these achievements,” she says.

Today, Tara leads as both a coach at Balwyn and as Gymnastics Coordinator for Special Olympics Melbourne Inner East. She takes pride in celebrating achievements of all kinds.

“I love facilitating and sharing the achievements my gymnasts make and celebrating their goals with them and their families. I love that these successes all look so different, whether it's increasing independence during a training session or winning a gold medal at the Special Olympic World Games!”

Reflecting on her award, Tara says: “Ultimately, I feel so proud to represent my athletes and their achievements and to be a voice for and enable inclusive sport.”

Congratulations Tara!
