From workplace pressures to personal struggles, life can often feel overwhelming for many of us. The latest data suggests that 43% of Australians will experience a mental disorder in their lifetime.
While we often know what to do when someone has a physical injury – apply a bandage, put ice on a sprain, or call an ambulance – knowing how to help someone experiencing a mental health challenge isn't always as clear.
That’s where mental health first aid (MHFA) training comes in. It gives you the tools to support a friend, colleague, or family member when they need it most. In this blog, we’ll explore what mental health first aid training is, why it’s so important, and the MHFA courses available right here at the Y.
What is mental health first aid (MHFA) training?
Mental health first aid training gives you the skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.
You’ll learn about the early signs of mental health challenges, and how to recognise when someone is struggling. You’ll also learn how to provide support and guide that person toward appropriate professional help.
Anyone can take part in MHFA training, including workplaces, families, sporting clubs and other community groups.
Why is mental health first aid training important?
It can help save lives
MHFA training equips participants with the skills to provide support, de-escalate crises, and prevent harm. This creates stronger communities where everyone feels seen, heard and supported, rather than alone in their struggles. By getting trained, you’ll be helping to change the narrative around mental health and make a positive difference in the lives of those around you.
It reduces impact on the workplace
Economic data indicates that by the end of 2024, poor mental health was costing the Australian economy up to $936 million every day. In workplaces, mental health-related claims result in 30.7 working weeks lost. This is almost five times longer than the 6.2 weeks typically associated with a physical injury.
Research on Psychological Safety has identified that prioritising psychological health reduces:
- job strain by 14%
- depression by 13%
- sickness absence by 43%
- presenteeism (working while unwell) by 72%
Investing in mental health training isn't just the right thing to do; it creates mentally healthy workplaces that thrive. It saves dollars that can be put back into the great work we do for our communities.
It ensures workplaces are compliant
As of 1 December 2025, all Victorian workplaces and organisations must comply with new State Government Psychosocial Workplace Safety Legislation. MHFA training underpins the six key areas identified in this legislation, ensuring your organisation is not only compliant but genuinely caring for its people.
