Nine hundred and sixty Victorian government school students will head to camp to tackle maths problems and take on outdoor challenges as part of a new statewide program delivered across the Y’s Discovery Camps network.
The Victorian Maths Camps initiative will bring Year 9 and 10 students to six Y Discovery Camp locations across Victoria from the second half of 2026.
Funded through the Victorian Government’s Excellence in Every Classroom vision, the program is delivered by the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) in partnership with the University of Melbourne, the Mathematical Association of Victoria (MAV) and the Y.
Over two and a half years, 24 free five-day camps will combine workshop-based mathematical problem solving with outdoor camp experiences.
The program has been designed to support students from groups traditionally underrepresented in advanced mathematics, including First Nations communities, rural and regional areas, and students experiencing socioeconomic disadvantage.
Y Head of Camps Operations Daniel Whykes said the camps show how outdoor environments can support learning in different ways.
Camp creates opportunities for young people to think differently, connect with others and back themselves in new situations. We’re proud to be hosting the Victorian Maths Camps across our six sites and helping create environments where students can challenge themselves, work together and discover new interests.
The program is devised and led by AMSI and MAV, with support from the Centre for Higher Education Studies.
The first camps will begin in late 2026.
